Richard P. Halverson, CFA


Before joining Great Northern Capital Mr. Halverson was president of the specialty investment advisory firm of C.H. Brown Company, Inc., from 1986 to 1994.  While at Brown he developed several highly sophisticated computer investment systems.  These include a return enhanced model for core cash, a high growth model for S&P 500 stocks, and a market neutral equity model.

From 1977 to 1986 he was with First Trust Company Inc. (and its predecessor First Trust Company of St. Paul).  During that period he held a number of increasingly responsible executive positions including Senior Vice President and Group Head of Institutional Trust Services with responsibility for $6.9 billion of institutional trust assets; Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer with fiduciary and investment responsibility for assets in excess of $5.2 billion. He was responsible for a number of creative growth products including 401(k) Made Easy, Master Trust Made Easy, Super STIF, Time Deposit Open Accounts and greatly improved common fund performance.

From 1968 to 1977 he was with Waddell & Reed, Inc., manager of the United Mutual Fund, with assets in excess of $2.2 billion.  He served as Vice President, Portfolio Manager of two funds, and member of the Investment Committee.

Mr. Halverson received a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University with a concentration in finance.  He graduated with Distinction and was named a Baker Scholar. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Utah, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

He has been extensively involved in professional, civic, and church affairs.  Among these he has served in numerous positions for the CFA Institute, the world-wide organization for professional investors.  These positions include President of the Kansas City Chapter, member of the Professional Ethics and Responsibility Committee, Chair of the Professional Conduct Committee and Chair of the Ethics Awareness Committee.  He has served as a Bishop and Stake President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He holds the respected Chartered Financial Analyst designation.  In 1994 he received the Daniel J. Forrestal III Leadership Award given by the CFA Institute.

Mr. Halverson is the author of the book Financial Freedom (Harbor Publishing), and a contributing author to The McGraw Hill Real Estate Handbook (McGraw Hill).  He is a frequent lecturer on the subject of investing and ethics in the investment industry.


Steven G. Rothmeier


Mr. Rothmeier is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Rothmeier founded Great Northern Capital, a private investment and merchant banking firm in March 1993, after serving as president of a Twin Cities venture capital and merchant banking firm.  Previously, he was chairman of the board and chief executive officer of NWA Inc. and Northwest Airlines Inc.

Mr. Rothmeier is a director of ArvinMeritor Inc., Precision Castparts Corp., and Waste Management Inc.

Mr. Rothmeier is a trustee of the University of Chicago, a member of the Council on the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago, chairman The Lumen Christi Institute, past director of the American Council on Germany, a trustee for the German Marshall Fund of the United States, an advisor to the Metropolitan Economic Development Association of the Twin Cities, a minority business advisory group, and former vice chairman of the U.S. - China Business Council.

Jay E. Rothmeier


Mr. Rothmeier began his investment management career twenty years ago as Vice President and Portfolio Manager of Investment Advisers, Inc., a Minneapolis based investment management firm with $12 billion in assets under management. He has extensive experience as a portfolio manager in a broad range of investment styles and strategies for both institutional and high net worth clients.

Most recently, Mr. Rothmeier was vice president in the marketing and client service areas at Portfolio Management Group, a division of American Express Asset Management Group, Inc. in Minneapolis.  He was responsible for a nationwide marketing and client service effort for high net worth individuals and families, middle market institutions, wire house brokerages, and the independent consulting industry, in both conventional equity and fixed income products, and alternative equity products.

Mr. Rothmeier is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where he received his BA degree, and holds NASD certifications for Series 3,7,31 and 66.

Thomas A. Mahowald

Before joining Great Northern Capital Mr. Mahowald was the Director of Equity Research at FAF Advisors from 2004 to 2008. While at FAF, he was co-manager of the Large Cap Select mutual fund (Core Strategy) and co-authored the firm’s Equity Investment Process, which integrates the disciplines of fundamental research, quantitative research and portfolio management.

From 1997 to 2004, he was with American Express Financial Advisors. During that period he held a number of increasingly responsible positions within the investment research area including Vice President and Director of Equity Research and Senior Equity Analyst.

From 1994 to 1997 he was with the Northern Trust Company as a Senior Analyst with industry and individual stock coverage responsibilities. Mr. Mahowald started his investment career at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1986 to 1994 with industry and individual stock coverage responsibilities.

Mr. Mahowald is a graduate of Saint John’s University and received a MS Finance degree from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and is a member of the CFA Society of Minnesota. He is a Board member of the Milestone Growth Fund (non-profit, funding minority businesses) and a Mentor to the Carlson Funds Enterprise at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management.
